For better branding, you might need to match your custom print to the exact Pantone colors on your brand’s logo or artwork. Here you’ll run into one of the major limitations of puff ink printing.

Puff printed colors appear more washed out or muted than the original plastisol ink. 

Remember, to achieve a puff print, the printing ink or pigment have to be mixed with a puff additive. When the ink expands, the color has a tendency to lighten up a shade or two.

This isn’t ideal for brand logos.

The sweet spot is a line weight of one point (0.35 mm) or greater. For design detailing, halftone dots should be no finer than 20 lpi (lines per inch).

A compromise that your printer may offer is to reduce the height that the puff grows to, but calibrating this relies heavily on their expertise.

3 - Not Ideal for Photo Based Prints

Say you wanted custom souvenir shirts printed with a photo of the Mona Lisa or, better yet, North Dakota’s giant birds on the Enchanted Highway, puff printing would not work.

For photo realistic prints to look crisp, they need to be printed using a high mesh count screen. Conversely, for you to deposit enough ink on the fabric for puff ink printing, you need a lower mesh count screen. 

Mesh count refers to the number of threads that cross each other per square inch of the screen.

Puff ink printing isn’t ideal for photo based designs since the low mesh count used wouldn’t allow for details.

As we mentioned previously, tiny details that are close together get blurred out by puff ink.

4 - High Initial Set Up Cost

Puff printing often costs more than regular printing and may be even more expensive for small custom orders.

Puff ink printing falls under specialty screen printing services. It requires an extra ingredient, the foaming agent, coupled with the expertise to understand how to manipulate the ink vs. puff agent ratio to suit each design. 

For this reason, printers will often attach an add-on cost to puff printing services and it’s worth confirming before you go ahead.

Understanding these potential challenges can help you make an informed decision about when and how to use puff ink for your clothing customization. With proper technique and knowledge, printers can achieve striking statement pieces.

It’s essential to select colors that truly captures the essence of your design and enhances its overall aesthetic. 

For instance, what is the subject matter and theme behind your embroidery design? What are your brand colors? Do you want something vibrant? Or understated?

Crewneck sweatshirts and hoodies, for instance, provide a large canvas at the front for showcasing your embroidery design. Our embroidery machines allow us to embroider up to 12 inches wide.

Zip-up sweatshirts, both full zip and 1/4 zip, offer less room for your embroidery design because the zipper gets in the way. This leaves you with placement options to the sides of the zip lining, of which, the left chest is the most common. An additional placement option is either sleeve or on the back between the shoulders. 

Ultimately, the choice of sweatshirt style will depend on the desired look and function of the apparel. So, consider the type of design you want to embroider and the use of the sweatshirt (business, school, fashion, etc.).

The best thing to do with children at TMA is visit the Family Center. It's designed for kids to enjoy and learn art with their parents.

The art pieces range from classic to contemporary, with some drawn by some of the most incredible artists in history, such as Joseph Turner, Pablo Picasso, Claude Monet, and Vincent Van Gogh.

Pączki (singular Pączek, pronounced “pohnch-chek”) are traditional Polish pastries that are somewhat like donuts. They are traditionally made with butter rather than shortening and they’re less sweet than traditional American donuts.

Traditional Pączki Recipe

Ingredients:

• 2 cups all-purpose flour
• 1/4 cup granulated sugar
• 1/2 teaspoon salt
• 1/2 cup whole milk scalded then cooled to 100–110 °F
• 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted and cooled
• 2 large egg yolks, room temperature
• 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
• 1 tablespoon active dry yeast
• Zest of 1 lemon or orange (optional)
• 4 cups vegetable oil, for frying

• 1 cup fruit preserves or custard (e.g., raspberry, strawberry, plum, or rosehip preserves, or vanilla custard)

Instructions:

1. In a small bowl, combine the warm milk, sugar, and yeast. Stir gently and let sit for 5–10 minutes until the yeast becomes foamy.
2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the egg yolks, melted butter, vanilla extract, and lemon or orange zest (if using). Add the yeast mixture and stir to combine.
3. Gradually add the flour and salt to the wet ingredients, mixing until a soft dough forms. You may need to use your hands to fully incorporate the flour.
4. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5 minutes, or until it becomes smooth and elastic. If the dough is too sticky, add more flour as needed.
5. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean cloth, and let it rise in a warm, draft-free place for 1–2 hours, or until it has doubled in size.
6. Once the dough has risen, roll it out onto a floured surface to a thickness of about 1/2 inch. Use a round cookie cutter or glass (about 3 inches in diameter) to cut out circles from the dough. Re-roll the scraps and cut out additional circles until all the dough is used.

8. While the dough is rising, heat the vegetable oil in a deep frying pan or Dutch oven to 350°F. Use a candy or deep-fry thermometer to ensure accurate temperature.

Midwest American Pączki With Peanut Butter & Jelly Filling

Ingredients:

For the dough:

• 2 cups whole milk, lukewarm
• 4 1/2 teaspoons active dry yeast (2 packets)
• 1/2 cup granulated sugar
• 4 cups all-purpose flour
• 4 large egg yolks
• 1/2 teaspoon salt
• 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
• 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted

For the filling:

• 1 cup creamy peanut butter
• 1 cup jelly or jam (grape, strawberry, or raspberry)

For frying and coating:

• Vegetable oil (for deep frying)
• 1 cup granulated sugar

Instructions:

1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the lukewarm milk, active dry yeast, and one tablespoon of granulated sugar. Allow the mixture to sit for 5–10 minutes, or until frothy.
2. Add the remaining sugar, flour, egg yolks, salt, vanilla extract, and melted butter to the yeast mixture. Stir until a soft dough forms.
3. Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for 5–7 minutes, or until smooth and elastic. Alternatively, you can use a stand mixer with a dough hook attachment.
4. Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for one-two hours, or until doubled in size.
5. Punch down the dough and roll it out to about 1/2-inch thickness on a lightly floured surface. Using a round cookie cutter or a glass, cut out circles from the dough.
6. Place the cut-out dough circles on a parchment-lined baking sheet, cover with a clean kitchen towel, and let them rise for an additional 30–45 minutes, or until they have slightly puffed up.
7. While the dough is rising, prepare the filling. In two separate piping bags, fill one with peanut butter and the other with jelly or jam. Set aside.
8. In a deep fryer or a heavy-bottomed pot, heat the oil to 350°F (175°C). Carefully lower a few dough circles into the hot oil, making sure not to overcrowd the pot.
9. Fry the Pączki for 2–3 minutes on each side, or until golden-brown. Use a slotted spoon to remove the Pączki from the oil and transfer them to a paper towel-lined plate to drain any excess oil.

It’s late Tuesday and just as the National Weather Services (NWS) predicted and warned, a heavy snowstorm brews overnight across the Midwest.

But few residents understand the impending danger and by morning, most go about their routines, ignoring stay-at-home advisories.

By 3:45 PM EST, the situation escalates into a severe blizzard with a second warning issued by the NWS. But the drama is already unfolding with clogged highways, canceled flights, suspended train services, and stranded people.

Travel is at a complete standstill and shelter is anywhere you can find it. The days-long 1978 Blizzard begins.

These were the tough makings of the communities in the Midwest that spawned a culture of resilience and solidarity, enabling them to find triumph from tragedy. You could practically feel the frigid temperatures of that winter day in 1978 when the blizzard descended on the Midwest. One resident recalls stuffing newspapers into the cracks around his garage door just to keep the howling winds from forcing the snow in through them.

He was among the lucky ones, at least he got home. The highways were clogged with dozens of stranded motorists and paralyzed vehicles with snow pilling high all around them. In essence, a worst-case scenario for travel that no one was prepared for.

The scene played out in throughout the Midwest and even into Canada. Ohio, Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, and Wisconsin were all hit hard.

However, out of this once-in-a-generation tragedy emerged an inspiring story of blizzard resilience, as Midwesterners came together to help each other through this most difficult time.

In the spirit of Midwest unity, residents stepped up to fulfill their civic duty, volunteering and donating resources to ensure all the members of their community had what they needed. These included water, food, and medical supplies.

This act brought about empathy and solidarity among Midwesterners, proving that even in the darkest moments we can rely on our neighbors to set things right again. 

So, today we celebrate this lasting legacy of tragedy triumph at creandoespaciosmx with a timeless Blizzard of '78 Sweatshirt.

In the wake of the ‘78 Blizzard, there were wrecked homes, businesses, blocked roads, downed power lines, and people struggling to make sense of a new reality.

However, from the ashes of this uniting disaster, rose the phoenix of resilient communities that brought about triumph and transformation within record time.

Among the first groups to organize were volunteers from all over the Midwest who came together to:

• Help create awareness among incoming travelers in terms of blocked and impassable roads
• Donate financial resources and food supplies to emergency rescue teams
• Provide emotional support for the immediate victims of shock, injury, and lost loved ones

Soon, the local government got involved in an extensive recovery effort involving heavy machinery, crisis response professionals, and even the National Guard. With that, efforts went into clearing blocked roads, uncovering vehicles, restoring power, and widespread repairs.

The Great Turnaround Story

To date, the ‘78 Blizzard serves as an insightful case study of disaster response and management. It highlighted the need for the local governments in the Midwest to invest more in emergency response plans including transport.

This conclusion came after the Ohio police had to ask citizens with snowmobiles and four-wheel-drive vehicles to help transport medical staff to the hospital.

It also paved the way for better communication and warnings by the National Weather Service (NWS) by highlighting the need for urgent public reaction. Before this event, most of the public was skeptical of NWS predictions and went about their routines on the day.

But this isn’t the case today in the Midwest as weather warnings are taken more seriously with advisories such as “Stay indoors” being implemented effectively.

Their towering presence teleports us back in time to experience what transpired behind closed doors and guarded gates.

Pythian Castle is one such building that is of great significance in the Toledo community. It’s a reminder of our city's rich history (which you can carry with you, thanks to the Pythian Castle Shirt).

The majestic structure is nestled in Toledo's Center City at the corner of Jefferson Avenue and N. Ontario Street. It occupies an expanse of 30,000 sq ft.

While the building’s remarkable design is enough to teleport you to another era, it holds other lesser-known intriguing facts.

As we take you back in time to Pythian Castle, you’ll discover:

• The building was constructed by a secret society in the 1890s
• Romanesque architecture was used for the building’s design
• You can encounter a ghost, based on other people’s stories
• This mystical building has been vacant for over forty years

Let’s step into Pythian Castle and discover the mysteries that beckon us.

1 - The Castle Was a Secret Society’s Meeting Place

What comes to your mind when you think of secret societies? Perhaps you envision mystical practices, exclusive membership, power, influence, and sworn secrecy.

That couldn’t be far from the truth, because secret societies are exclusive organizations that conceal their activities from the public. Members employ oaths, secret language, symbols, and rituals to solidify their unity.

The Toledo Pythian Castle was built in 1890 by Knights of Pythias, a fraternal organization and secret society. This was after Justus H. Rathborne, a clerk in the US treasury during the Civil War founded the Pythian Knights organization.

Rathborne was hoping to help the nation heal from the violence of war by embracing the brotherhood organization, which was dedicated to the ideals of friendship, charity, and benevolence.

Because the organization was formed during a time of war, They needed to hold meetings secretly due to political pressure discouraging people from joining such groups. Secret meetings provided them with the privacy and security they needed.

Members wore metal jewelry with the symbols FCB to stand for friendship, charity and benevolence. Rathbone came up with ceremonies, rites, and costumes which remain secrets of the order to this day.

Intriguing fact: Pythian Castle was at one time used as a training facility for soldiers. Though its original purpose was to hold meetings, World War II left a mark on this building as soldiers etched graffiti on the walls during their training.

The Knights of Pythias group continued using this castle until 1951 when they sold it to Greyhound Lines, a bus services company located next to the castle.

2 - Its Marvelous Design Features Romanesque Architecture

We chose to showcase Pythian Castle on a vintage t-shirt due to the building’s unique structure and history in Toledo. We love preserving our culture, and so celebrating Toledo’s architecture is one of our favorite things.

Pythian Castle stands out from the surrounding buildings due to its breathtaking design. In fact, in 1908, it was described as "the finest building entirely devoted to Pythianism." Its uniqueness was a result of the Romanesque design used.

The Pythian Castle occupies 30,000 sq ft. Its highest point is the turret at Jefferson avenue, which reaches 122 ft (37m), while the main roof is 79 ft (24m). The exterior is made of contoured sandstone, a conical roof, a tower, and arched windows.

Our Pythian Castle Shirt features a hand drawn illustration of the iconic building. The colorful accents and text give it a vintage vibe similar to the building. You’ll also find this illustration in the You Will Do Better in Toledo Coloring Book.

3 - Rumor Has It That the Building Is Haunted

“The moon cast eerie shadows across the abandoned castle, illuminating the overgrown ivy and thorns. Suddenly, a cold wind howled through the broken glass, echoing ghostly whispers inside the castle.

As I stepped inside, a tingling sensation crawled up my spine, and I realized I wasn’t alone. I could feel an invisible pair of eyes watching me keenly. Without warning, a loud shriek…….”

Such chilling descriptions usually originate from people who dare to explore haunted houses. Some abandoned structures seem to harbor spirits trapped in time—neither living nor resting in peace. It’s like they’re condemned to wander eternally in the empty hallways and rooms, spooking whoever they encounter.

Did you Know? The Winchester Mystery House in California and Amityville Horror House in New York have a reputation for being “heavily” haunted. Witnesses report seeing shadowy figures, hearing strange noises, and witnessing strange movement of objects.

Pythian Castle has had its share of ghost stories, probably due to the fact that it has been abandoned for years. Some people who‘ve visited the place claim that the place is haunted due to the paranormal sensations they experienced.

A Toledo resident recounts her experience at the castle:

“As we made our way from room to room, we took countless photos and marveled at every architectural detail until we made our way back to what looked like the back-stage area, complete with small dressing rooms and vanities for performers long since dead or forgotten. As we walked through, careful where to step as the floor boards had rotted through in some spots, I felt a strange presence about me. Someone was there with us, yet I saw no one. It was the unmistakable feeling of being watched. I never forgot that feeling.” — Jennifer Shortridge, Haunted Toledo

Whether the castle is haunted or not, the ghost stories make the building more mysterious, and if you like going on ghost tours, now you have a new target to investigate.

4 - The Castle Has Been Frozen in Time Since 1974

Pythian Castle has been vacant since 1974 when a fire erupted in the premises, forcing the occupants to move out.

Prior to 1978, The castle served not only as a place to hold secret meetings, but it also had retail space. One of the earliest tenants was J.W. Green Co, a retail and wholesale dealer of pianos and organs.

When the Knights of Pythian eventually moved out of the castle in 1951, they sold it to Greyhound Lines, a bus services company who owned it until the 1970s when Ed Emery took over.

He set up a youth center and rented out space to an art studio, antiques shop, and music store. He also registered it under the National Register of Historic Places in 1972.

Unfortunately, a fire erupted in 1974, causing the occupants to vacate. The building froze in time until 2016 when David Ball, a developer, started renovating it. That was despite people commenting that it would be impossible, considering the caved roof, collapsed floors and other major damages.

David Ball said this when he took up the project:

“I knew it would be a challenge, I knew this project would be tough and expensive. It has certainly been all of that, but at the end of the day, I will be proud to see the building occupied. There’s nothing like it in this city. To have it removed from our skyline would have been a loss."

Tony and his wife, Rose, armed with a hard-found $100 loan from relatives, opened up an ice cream and sandwich shop in the Toledo area of Consaul.

One unexpected factor to consider when choosing puff ink for your design is the significance of the garment that you're printing on. 

This comes into play with the "hand feel" of the design on the garment and the final 3-dimensional look of the puff print. It is more common for us to use puff ink on sweatshirts than t-shirts for both of these reasons.

As it relates to "hand feel", puff ink is heavier on a garments. It grabs the material differently than standard ink and can even create a pucker effect on lightweight fabrics such as t-shirts. This is less prevalent on sweatshirts because the heavier material withstands the extra weight of the puff print.

Additionally, the amount a print puffs is related to the thickness of the material you are printing on. A thicker garment generally results in a puffier print. This isn't to say that you can't get great puff results on a t-shirt - it just takes a little extra work.

So keep these factors in mind when deciding on your final choices for puff print.

Veteran American fighter pilots, who founded the club, used this question as a unique identification code for its secretive members, which enabled them to associate freely without the fear of infiltration.

The question also served as a form of motivation with the expected cheeky response being, “You bet your sweet ass I am.”

This humorous response created a sense of banter and brotherhood on top of being a secret password, which motivated members and added to the club’s popularity.

The Turtle Club name came from the veteran pilots’ shared wartime experience in Europe, where they observed the resilience and tenacity of the local sea turtle hatchlings.

Upon hatching, these comrades in shells dashed in solidarity for the ocean in the face of imminent death from preying birds.

And once at sea, the turtles navigated great distances together and survived more predators including fish, sea birds, and crabs.

These admirable traits strongly reflected the personality of the veteran pilots who similarly stood together in the face of danger and survived long combat missions. This inspired them to name the club after the bold turtles as a symbol of their shared indomitable character.

The Turtle Club as a Floating Tavern on the Ottawa River

Long after the war, the Turtle Club’s reputation exceeded fighter pilot circles.

Recollections of the brave pilots who’d stick their necks out for each other inspired great admiration from other military personnel who wished to be associated with them.

Naturally, when a waterfront establishment catering to military staff popped up on the Ottawa River in 1956, the only befitting title was (yes, you guessed it) The Turtle Club.

It was the perfect word-of-mouth marketing strategy to popularize the tavern amongst military circles and beyond, and boy did it work!

Soon, droves of patrons, military and civilian, filed into the establishment in the summer, creating a perfectly informal and cheerful atmosphere.

This is how the Turtle Club morphed into a floating tavern on the Ottawa River in Point Place. It even bore the same iconic turtle emblem as its logo.

For over three decades, the tavern kept the enthusiastic Turtle spirit alive with a lively atmosphere of patrons and a delicious menu of burgers and beers.

And in keeping up with Turtle tradition of banter, any member who failed to respond correctly to the question, “Are you a Turtle?” had to pay the amusing penalty of buying the next round of burgers and beers.

In the summer, the calm and scenic view of the Ottawa River gave its patrons a wonderful relaxing feel. Meanwhile, the incoming breeze and sounds of water splashing against the tavern completed the experience with the perfect chillout ambiance.

This is why, after its closure in 1993, this floating tavern on the Ottawa River remains one of the most unique and memorable experiences in Point Place.

Residents and former frequenters still organize nostalgic reunions celebrating the Turtle Club Tavern, proving that it was among the best reinventions of the Turtle Club after the war, which included fraternities, social clubs, and fan clubs.

The Legacy of the Turtle Club, the Apollo 12 Mission

The Apollo 12 was the second manned mission to the moon that successfully landed the Intrepid Lunar Module with pinpoint accuracy.

During the mission, a member of the crew, Walt Cunningham, held up a cue card addressing Paul Haney (then NASA’s public affairs officer) with the question, “Are you a Turtle?”

It was a cheeky reference to the secretive society that made the Apollo 12 mission possible, the Ancient and Honorable Order of the Turtles, which was another reincarnation of the Turtle Club.

From its World War II origins of American fighter pilots, the Turtle Club blossomed to include aerospace engineers, space pilots, commanders, and the 1969 Mission Control director Gerry Griffin.

Their collaborative effort accelerated space exploration and pioneered navigation techniques such as pinpoint landing, and so defined the legacy of the Turtle Club as the society behind the Apollo 12 Moon Mission.

By Turtle Club law, Paul Haney was humorously required to answer Walt over the open microphone and during the live Apollo telecast, “You bet your sweet ass I am,” or the next round of beers was on him.

Naturally, he did. The buying that is.
